Retro A to Z Challenge: U – Underworld 2003 (plus updates on Godzilla, Jurassic World, and Bioshock Movies)

Underworld – 2003

Released in January, usually the dumping ground for movies, this film was a complete surprise. Following a war between vampires and werewolves, it featured a sexy, leather-clad Kate Beckinsale. (I still want that outfit for my wife. She still says no.) Three sequels have followed (with another in the making), but nothing beats the fun and adventurous original.

2003 fun facts –
*Cost of a new house - $246,300.
*Cost of gas - $1.83
*The Do Not Call Registry was implemented
*The Concorde made its last commercial flight
*Apple launched iTunes, selling ten million songs in the first four months
*The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their first Super Bowl

Movies released –
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions
X2
Finding Nemo
School of Rock
The Italian Job
Elf

Music released –
Rush in Rio (live)
Anthrax – We’ve Come For You All
OSI – The Office of Strategic Influence

Games released –
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

And why is 2003 special?
Because 2003-2004 Angela Brown’s life was wonderful and she was blessed with her daughter, the Chipmunk!

Angela is an author and has a daughter she fondly refers to as the Chipmunk. She helps with several other blogs and publishes books under a second name, Rayven Godchild. Angela is just a delight, and so thoughtful and caring. Find her blog HERE

Three New Books!

Pat Hatt just released three more Tarsier Man books.
Not one, not two – three!

Congratulations, Pat!

Movie News

The game Bioshock’s road to the big screen seemed doomed. However, JoBlo reported yesterday:
Kotaku has noticed that about a month ago, Sony registered multiple domain names with the words "Bioshock" and "movie" in the URL. While this is far from a confirmation that the movie is back in development, it is definitely intriguing. Unlike specific domain names with subtitles, this clearly has the word "movie" which means we cannot misconstrue it as another video game or other type of project.

Jurassic World News – there may be sequels!
From Blastr:
Director Colin Trevorrow, who takes over the franchise with the upcoming Jurassic World, told the print edition of Empire they’re already eyeing plans for more sequels to this semi-reboot of the franchise.

And in Godzilla News –
From The Epoch Times, a few words from director Gareth Edwards about the time and care that went into designing Godzilla:
He said creating Godzilla–one that appears fresh and original–took about a year. “Forget the giant monsters,” he told them. “If this really happened, it would be a life-changing experience. You have to take it seriously.”
“I grew up watching Spielberg movies,” he said, referring to director Steven Spielberg. “What they did so well — as well as having epic, fantastic spectacle — they made the characters feel real and human. We were trying to do the same thing here.”

Fan of Underworld? Following the talented Angela Brown? Picking up Pat’s books? Think we’ll ever see a Bioshock movie? Do you want more Jurassic World films? As excited as I am for Godzilla next month? And what do you remember best about 2003…?

I’m also at the Insecure Writer’s Support Group website today!

I'll see Jurassic World when it comes out. Once that's happened, I'll be able to decide whether I think more films is a good or bad thing.

2003 was a great year for me! I took a three week trip through Europe, seeing Italy,Austria Switzerland, and France. I also turned 18 that fall. I also got together with my first boyfriend. Yeah, I didn't date until I was 18, but it was only because people thought I was a loser.

I'm DYING to see Godzilla. My brothers and I would watch the old black and white versions. Go Mothra! I saw Return of the King 11 times with my kids in the theater that year. Yep, that's how we Rose's roll when we like a movie.

I hope your wife gives in soon and wears the outfit for you. But I have no idea where you could possibly buy it.

LOVED the original Underworld... Kate was SIZZLING!

FANTASTIC PREMISE. And I agree the others weren't as good as the original.

Angela is AWESOME!

Congrats to Pat!

Not to excited about the BIG LIZARD... but it could be cool...

LOVE the Do Not Call register, but here in Oz it doesn't go far enough. Political parties and charities can call regardless, and some of the most annoying companies just ignore the register.

Wow! I read your T post this morning on my phone, came back to comment and your U post is already up. It's that East Coast/West Coast think.

Taking care to make Godzilla more human - OK, I'll take their word for it.

I'm a big fan of the Underworld franchise. I like the look of the movies - dark and moody. And this may sound odd for my "horror-esque" tastes, but although I loved LoTR and Matrix - I adored Finding Nemo! <3

Congrats to Pat - 3 times!!

A new Jurassic franchise? Yes please! :)

Liked Underworld and always ready to re-watch Kate Beckinsale... plus great fan of her dad Richard. Sad loss - watch Porridge for some of his best moments plus Ronnie Barker.

Even though Jackson had to work round the Scouring of the Shire, RotK was a great finale to LOTR saga.

Looking forward to Godzilla but wheelchair means waiting until out on Blueray.

I think most men want their wives to buy that outfit. My son's girlfriend wore it for Halloween last year. She rocked it! (Even as a blonde haha)

Thanks for reminding me I need to update the Do Not Call list. Been awhile. Like ten years.

Update: Six shows to go until I'm at the finale for Face Off. Again, thanks for giving me a reason to be a lump on the couch yesterday. Really, it was a migraine, but I blame you. It's what I do.

See you at the IWSG blog.

Underworld! Woot! That is definitely one of the movies that is in my "top fave" list. Kate worked her outfits perfectly and did the same with the weaponry.

Godzilla is still a question for me. I remember watching the original and hearing its roar...still both exciting and weird lol!!

And thank you for the shout out *blush* I'm touched.

Like Hilary, I am a fan of the first Italian Job, I didn't think the second one was nearly as good. I taped it years ago and still have it. I have the LOTR too. Elf I thought was a stupid movie. Like Finding Nemo.

I thought the cessation of the Concorde was such a shame, it was a brilliant plane.

As for the Do Not Call Registry, it worked at the beginning, seems to not be so effective now.

The thing that I love about Bioshock is that it's like playing a movie. So much detail went into the storyline, which I as a writer AND a gamer appreciate. If we get a movie, great. If not, that's okay too. I still love the game.

Also, I know your pain. I told my wife I'd love her to wear one of those incredibly busty wench costumes to the Renaissance Festival next time we go, but so far that's a no go. Maybe my problem is simply that I keep calling it "the wench costume." (Well, that IS its name...)

kjmckendry said...

Angela is great! She is so bubbly!

I don't really care to see any more Jurassic movies. I didn't think the last couple were very good, though I loved the first one.

In 2003 we moved again from Philadelphia to New Hampshire.

Joylene Nowell Butler said...

Leather sticks. It's not bad getting it on, but taking it off might be difficult. Course, I'm not sure, having never worn that much leather. As for UnderWorld, loved it. It was a total surprise. The hero is a Canadian actor by the name of Scott Speedman. He went on to star in Felicity. He once starred in a Canadian film about a young man who has a party in his kitchen while his parents are out because they have a shag in the living room that his mother rakes. They're not allowed to walk on it. LOL. We had a shag when I was a kid. Weird thing.

Hmmmm now on a great note we are still great friends and his family kept me in their loop too:)

The travelers for Godzilla have been so confusing. I can't tell if its a monster movie or end of the world movie. I almost died in 2003, at the age of 23. I would've shared my Jahrzeit (death anniversary) with Groucho Marx and Blaise Pascal. My Southern Italian body type probably saved my life, since I had less distance to fall and more flesh to cushion the impact. I also believe my late uncle was watching over me, and the reason I escaped with relatively minor injuries (a broken leg, scrapes, bruises, gashes, and cuts, first- and second-degree burns) instead of something a lot more serious.
