Insecure Writer’s Support Group, Ninja News, Wednesday Movie Quote, and Get Healthy Bloghop!

It’s time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group! Time to release our fears to the world – or offer encouragement to those who are feeling neurotic. If you’d like to join us, click on the tab above and sign up. We post the first Wednesday of every month. I encourage everyone to visit at least a dozen new blogs and leave a comment. Your words might be the encouragement someone needs.

My awesome co-hosts today are Lynda Young, Mark Koopmans, and Rachna Chhabria! Please be sure to thank them for their time and effort to make all IWSG members feel welcome.

With my third book coming out in September, I am still debating whether I will continue writing or not. I never planned beyond that first book, and three total is nothing short of a miracle. I’ve enjoyed focusing on my guitar playing and band. (Although this past month, I’ve spent a lot of time keeping up with the Challenge.)

I do have an idea for another book. At the moment, it’s a fairly straightforward space opera with one big twist.

But I know that if I am to grow as a writer, it needs to be a lot more than what I’ve done in the past. It needs to be really different. I’d need to apply a lot of ‘what ifs?’ to the story. Can I make it really unique and pull it off?

I envy those of you who want writing to be a career and are full of ideas. Some of you are so good at twisting stories and writing poetic prose. I’m just not sure that’s my path.

Maybe once summer is here and the blogging world has settled some, I’ll figure it out.

Be sure to visit other participants on the LIST!

I hope you continue writing but you must do what is right for you.

Some writers who want a career don't have a gazillion ideas. The ideas come and go. Often it's enough to focus on one idea at a time.

Having fun being a co-host!!!! Thanks for being brave to have me! ;)

Sheena-kay Graham said...

Congrats Melanie and yes Alex I'm one of those writers overflowing with ideas. But it has it's disadvantages with so many of them vying for your attention. Your gentle flow might be a blessing in disguise. Best of luck with CassaStorm and your writing future whether it's just blogging or more. Your movie quote choices were quite amusing.

mooderino said...

I think it's definitely worth exploring the new idea for a book.

When do we get a 'Having a Nap' blogfest?

Anonymous said...

Any idea should be given the space to develop. I'd run with it, Alex.

Elizabeth Spann Craig said...

Love the idea behind the new bloghop! Will look forward to some healthy recipes and motivation to get off my sofa! :)

I think that you'll continue being creative, no matter what--that might be with music, instead of writing. But we'd miss your books!

Kirsten said...

I think the fact that you have another idea for a story tells you more than you might think about your aspirations as a writer. I have a lot of ideas, but they do seem to line up nicely, not reaching the point where I have to write them until the last one reaches completion.
In any case, don't ever stop blogging! I would miss your movie reviews and trivia. I'm quiet and busy and don't comment that often, but know that I'm enjoying all that you do here. :)
And where do I sign up for next year's A-Z challenge? ;)

I hope you keep writing as well, but what ever path God has chosen for you, you know I'll be behind you a hundred percent.

I appreciate very much the encouraging comment you left on my blog. It means a lot.

I joined the bloghop! My healthy activity (ice dance) is ending today, as a matter of fact, so I'm on the lookout for new ways to keep fit through the summer.

Good luck with figuring out your path forward. I know you'll find the way that's best and right for you!

Laura Pauling said...

I've seen you making hints around the blogosphere: if I write another book.... I guess it's completely up to you and how you want to spend your time! :) Maybe once the idea takes hold...it won't be a choice!

Natalie Aguirre said...

I know what you mean about the writing. With a full-time job, busy blog, and a family, I don't feel as driven as I should to write.

The blog hop sounds fantastic. Wish I could participate but I have something scheduled that day.

Optimistic Existentialist said...

Raiders of the Lost Ark is actually one of my top 5 favorite movies of all-time Alex. Love that you chose quotes from that movie! I've probably seen it 100 times no joke!

Unknown said...

Just wait on God Alex. He'll tell you what to do next. Now go get some rest, the Challenge is over!

Unknown said...

Yay for IWSG! I've tried to inspire others by baring my soul and airing some dirty laundry today.

The problem with becoming a better writer, Alex, is that you become much more self-critical. Ideas aren't impressive enough; prose isn't gorgeous enough. Just keep aiming high and believe that the perfect story is waiting for you.

Good health? What's that? I've crawled into my writing cave, have enough food to last me a year, and hung up the "Do Not Disturb" sign. :P

Ian Anderson said...

I'll be interested to see what you decide to do with your writing career. Have you ever thought about writing short stories? I hadn't given it much thought as far as a career move, but there are a lot of huge names that were short story writers first.

I'm in on the health hop. Though it'll be more of a venting post for me...

Unknown said...

Great idea for a Blog Hop! Just added my name to the list.

Alex, I think with the interest in your books you are on the right path anyway, you should not feel under any pressure to change your style. When you are on a good thing, stick with it! (Do you have that saying in the US?

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Thanks, Yvonne.

Ray, good one!

Lynda, thank you for being brave enough to take it on one day after the Challenge!

Moody, you can take one tomorrow.

Thanks, Elizabeth.

Kristen, thank you! Appreciate that. And sign ups for next year open in January.

Melissa, thank you.

Star - ice dancing? Wow!

Laura, I'm afraid of that...

Natalie, that's all right.

Optimistic, same here! The perfect action-adventure film.

Lexa, thanks.

Clay, it's been years since I wrote a short story...

Carolyn, we do!

Laura Eno said...

Uh? Why do you feel you have to change anything about your writing in order to grow? People love your stories. Period. They would love another dozen in the same manner. There's nothing wrong with wanting to grow or expand but remember that people also love what you write like NOW. :) So write it.

Pat Hatt said...

When you are a crazy rhyming loon, not much insecurity comes due lol

And with my health issues up the arse, I tend to avoid droning on about them.

As for writing another book, sure sooner or later you'll get the bug at your nook.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

I love Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I think you should still write that story and write it in your own style.

Nicki Elson said...

Great idea for a hop. I'm in.

I've realized that the sure fire way to make myself doubt my own writing is to compare myself with others. We can and should learn from other writers, but we've each got our own writing path & one isn't better or worse than an another - though each will have its own audience, some audiences larger than others. As Laura points out, you've already got an audience who likes what you do.

Now, if it's just a matter of you wanting the adventure of exploring new territory, have at it! Clay makes an excellent suggestion with short story writing - it's a great way to venture into new territory to see how you like it and to hone your mastery of it. Another benefit: shorties take waaaaaay less time to write than a novel. ;p

Anonymous said...

Alex, with three books under your belt, I'd say you ARE a writer! At this time in our lives (I assume we're about the same age), these choices are important, and I support and encourage whatever your choice.

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

I think if the new idea is there and it's tugging at you and won't leave you alone, it's worth giving it a try. :)

Love that "snakes" line from RAIDERS, but I think it's funny mostly because of how Ford delivers it.

Rachel Schieffelbein said...

What a great idea! I signed up. :) Can't wait to read everyone's tips.

Juliana Haygert said...

If you have another idea, then I say go with it. What's the worse that can happen? You not liking what you wrote and putting it away. Would that be too bad? A la Nike: JUST DO IT! ;)

Al Diaz said...

It seems to me you're taking comparison as a factor to decide whether you should write another novel or not, but you're taking it the wrong way. Well, I've never been in favor of comparisons, but I know everybody does it. In any case, I don't think the success of three books was just coincidence. I'm sorry my friend but that's nonsense to me. Being an Amazon bestseller cannot possibly be an accident and the same brain that produced them can produce anything else. The problem is not if you have the capacity because you have it. The problem is whether you choose to believe you can or can't do it because whatever you believe, you'll make it truth. (And believe it or not, I'm smacking myself while I tell you this.) If the question is "can you" the answer is "Yes, you can". If the question is "do you want to", that's another story and that's something you must answer yourself for no one knows your heart better. I believe if you want, you can do both, write and play.

Melissa Sugar said...

Go with it, only good things will come from exploring a new idea . I'm not going to forget my IWSG post today

Luanne G. Smith said...

I think if you find yourself drawn to the computer to put down some new ideas you'll know you want to write another book.

And I'll be out of town during that get healthy bloghop, but part of the focus of my month off the blog was to amp up my workouts again. Yeah, we tend to sit a lot as writers. Not good.

Unknown said...

Alex-- I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on where you're at with your writing journey. It's good for those of in the path behind you a bit to hear about your thoughts and process.

I'm not a big hop person, but health is one important to me. I signed up for this one! Great idea.

Wow, Alex. You've done wonderfully with your writing. I didn't now you were contemplating its future. Picture if you fully commit; dang, I can see the starlight now. :) Best of luck making that decision. Heck, there's nothing lost in dabbling with that new idea.

Tonja said...

That's great you have an idea for a book. I think you've been really successful with your writing, so I'm guessing you don't need to mix it up too much to have continued success.

I guess when you finish the book three if your new idea takes hold and won't let you go...you'll have your answer. :) If you don't write more, I'm sure you'll disappoint a lot of fans.

As long as you have a story idea you should work on it. Take all the time you need and if you publish it, great! I know I'll read it.

I love the get healthy blog hop idea. This gives me a month to find something that helps me get healthy. That means I need to work on it! :)

Let's take inventory, Alex. Three successful space novels. A stunning and active blog. Tons of writer friends, and people who look to you for support and inspiration. I think it's time to call yourself a writer! Sometimes, our true calling finds us, despite our best efforts to ignore it!

Jessica, I just don't want to disappoint them by writing one that isn't fresh and new.

Every artist who becomes better is driven by a sense of not quite hitting the mark, always lacking in something. It drives the artist to reach, to grow, to become more than he or she was.

A novel in its idea stage is like a slowly forming gem in the fingers of your mind. You look at it from one angle and then another. Facets that surprise you become clear as you twist it and turn in the light of your imagination.

You can make this 4th novel something stunning and riveting. I have seen the artist capable of it in your past prose. Make a great adventure of it, Roland

farawayeyes said...

I'm plumb out of action adventure quotes, but I like yours.

The Healthy Blog Hop sounds like fun, but I am taking a break at the end of May/first part of June.

I remember feeling the same way, Alex. It never occurred to me that I'd be here all these years later with 6 books. Maybe there's another book in you. I hope so. If not, that's fine too.

Cindy R. Wilson said...

I'm one of those writers with tons of ideas, but it's executing them all well that's problem. Not enough time!

My insecurity today? I'm writing my first mostly fantasy book and I'm worried I'll be a terrible and unconvincing world-builder. Oh well, gotta start somewhere!

Going to go check out some of the other links!

J.L. Campbell said...

I'll have to keep a low profile for a while since I've done nothing but A-Z in April (bad writer, I know) Do want to put up a reflections post.

Cassie Mae said...

Ah, you quoted Indiana!

And I totally get your insecurity. I'm pretty sure all my books are the same book told over and over again with different jokes.

But you already have a career as a writer if you still want to do it. You are on a ton of auto-buy lists, and I know you won't disappoint anyone if you give them what they enjoyed of the Cassa Series. :) And once you write that new idea, plenty more will come if it's something you want. :)

Anonymous said...

I can relate to you on the only expecting to write one book. I started out writing just for fun and one idea seemed like something others would enjoy so I looked into publishing. Now I can't imagine myself not writing. It's like a flood gate has been opened.

Whatever you decide, good luck, Alex. I'm glad you decided to write because it led to IWSG and a ton of other fun things I've found thanks to you.

Anonymous said...

My sis who is great writer ( and who I think Cassie Mae said she wanted to meet when I said she was a great romance writer), said the other day that writing isn't what she wants to do, and I almost died inside, but sometimes, if what you can do well isn't what your passion is, then...*shrug*

The more I write, the less that I think about what it means to be a writer. I don't know if this is my path and I have no plans on quitting my day job but I do know that writing makes me feel better so I keep writing.

I say if you have an idea you should write it. Regardless of whether or not you go on to add another book to your list of publishings.

You know Alex, while I admire those who focus on the 'career' of being a writer, most stories come one idea at a time. It hits you and wiggles around in your sub-conscious, grows and demands an outlet. You write it. Yes, you also utilize the lessons learned to give a difference and a punch for the reader. What ifs are a great way to expand.

Personally, I have several creative outlets and all are important to my well being.

Your music and your writing are outlets that give you pleasure. That's all good. You're developing the gifts that you've been given. Each finished piece of those gifts is a form of praise. I don't see why there would have to be a choice.

I'm signing up for your healthy blog. Good idea.

Hooray! Finally a movie quote I know :D I'm in for the Get Healthy Blogfest. After a month of cookie recipes, I think I'm obligated to offer a healthier choice.

L.G. Keltner said...

I'm sure you'll figure out the path that's best for you. Whether you decide to keep writing or choose to focus on other things, I'm sure you'll do well.

Alex, thank you so much for giving a shout out for my book, that is very kind of you. Also, great idea for a blog hop. I, personally, could use the motivation.

Annalisa Crawford said...

You don't choose whether to write another book or not - it chooses you. One day, you'll sit down and start doodling the outline of the plot or a character, and you'll be half-way through before you realise!

Anonymous said...

I had to drop out from participating in the challenge this year but congrats to those who made it. You have to do what is right for you, write more books if you want or stop if you don't. Thank you for creating and hosting IWSG every month Alex.

I don't do a lot of Blog Hops these days, but this sounds like an important one. I was on Weight Watchers last year and plan to talk about that.

Robin said...

Too often we feel like what we have to offer in the writing world isn't enough. If we're not comparing ourselves to others, we're comparing ourselves with ourselves. (hopefully that made sense-lol). Letting your ideas stew for a bit is a great plan. Let all the dust settle from the A to Z madness and then move forward. Good luck to you, whatever you choose.

Shah Wharton said...

With the successes of your previous work, I think you are putting yourself down a little, as a writer. If you already do what pleases, why think you need to do something different. Not everyone want pretty prose or multiple twists. Just a thought. :)

I signed up to the health meme. I have so many issues (though gratefully nothing terminal, so I won't moan!) that it'll be a good thing to focus on using the month to work out some positives I incorporate to write the post. I do have quite a few, off the top of my head. :D

Jennifer Lane said...

Hi, Alex! I envy your awesome blogging skills and support of authors. I think it's fine to take a break from writing (however long that is) and if you want to pursue another novel, I know you'll have awesome ideas.

Thank you for the healthy blog hop! Sounds perfect and I signed up.

Indeed, and when you do, I and my dwarves will be there for the cheering.

Signed up for the Health Hop! Hope you find the inspiration to continue with your writing or whatever is your right path.

Have a nice quiet Thursday!

We each have our own paths and the universe speaks to us if we are quiet and still enough to listen. :) I'm always worried whether I'll come up with a new idea or not. It's probably my greatest writing fear.

Mel Chesley said...

I'm ready with my reflections post. I'm also thinking of joining this bloghop! I had some awesome success recently.

Nick Wilford said...

I'm sure you have many more great books in you. At least you are examining yourself and thinking about pushing yourself rather than growing complacent. Don't stop!

I'm not sure I have anything to offer in the blogfest but I'll be by to pick up some tips!

Unknown said...

Melanie's book cover is amazing! Congrats!

I just signed up for the Get Healthy Blog Hop. Exciting. :)

Birgit said...

I have to name just one insecurity?:) Well I hate that i did put on some weight and now can pinch 20 inches easily. Having back fat is just depressing. Add to the fact that I am quite sick at the moment and can not speak as I have lost my voice I am ripe to read all the health tips! I am taking Tai Chi which I find great in calming the mind and it is great for keeping balance. Mind is too blechh to think of a movie quote.

Writing 3 books is something to be very proud of! If you choose to write more- that is wonderful and if you focus on other creative outlets then that is what you are meant to do right now. :)

So many ways to be creative!

Congrats Melanie! And great idea for a blogfest. Writers do need to take better care of themselves.

I'm a big believer in only writing if you have something to say and NEVER writing beyond what you're passionate about.

If you have something to say beyond the Cassa series, I know I'd be one of the first to sign up to read it. But only write it if you NEEDS to be written.

I say go for it! Another Ninja Captain book is fine by us :)

I think, if you try to stop writing and can't then you will know. If you try to stop writing and can, than perhaps for now, the guitar is thing to focus on. It will come to you. Period.

Ooo, a space opera with a big twist? You should definitely write that!

Rick Daley said...

My favorite action movie quote is from Die Hard. It starts with "Yipee kay-yay..." (or however the heck you spell that)

Helena said...

I actually know one of the movie quotes for a change! "Snakes..." is from Raiders of the Lost Ark, my favorite movie of all time.

If you have a new idea for another novel, Alex, then maybe you should write it. As you know we've both talked about walking away from writing; one big difference is you're the one who's achieved bestsellerdom (congrats!). Then again, you've finished your trilogy so if you want to take some time off and only come back to writing (if at all) when you're good and ready and the new story is fully formed in your head, then you can decide at that time what to do. Whatever you choose, I wish you the best.

Jeff Hargett said...

My guess is you'll have a good inkling if more books are "your path" by the time summer comes to a close. There's this itch we get. If you can't refrain from scratching it, you've got it in you. :-)

Melissa said...

I hope you keep writing, Alex. If you're like most of us, it's in your blood. It will hunt you down and drag you back to your keyboard if you try walk away. LOL

You can do it, Alex! I'm absolutely positive. And grow doing it, as well. But you have to follow your heart. And your gut. Ooo, I love psych thrillers!! Not sure if ill have time for the Reflections thing since ill be busy in AZ, but I signed up for the blogfest!

Alex dude,

My friend, you are a gifted writer. Of that there is no doubt. With all these blog hops and blogfests and all your interaction, I don't know how you find the time to write a book. Big respect to you for that.

It seems I may have done a public service. Our friend Al Diaz, can now easily remember the letters, "IWSG". Good stuff, eh.

Well, if my two cents means anything, I would say go ahead write one, two or 20 more books, series, short stories. You definitely have an audience. As long as you keep enjoying it, you should do it.

Christine, thank you!

Rick, that's a good one!

Sometimes I wonder about the whole "grow as a writer" thing. If you write good stuff that you enjoy writing and people enjoy reading then why shouldn't you just keep writing more good stuff.

It can be fun to experiment with a story without intending to have it published. You can take risks and try out new stuff, and if you decide you want to share the final product with the world, then go for it. And if you don't, at least you can say you've had the pleasure of writing just for the sake of writing.

dolorah said...

One reason I stick to short stories is because I CAN make each one different. But I agree with needing to grow as a writer, and that's why I'm still working on a couple novels. Slowly. Like you, I'm not meant for writing to be my full time life.

For both the blog fests, I think I'll just hop around and visit what everyone else posts. Michael is my health-guru, but I fail at all the healthy stuff after about a month.

Hi, Alex,

Sorry to hear that you are still figuring out your purpose in life. We all go through many journeys to fulfill our destiny. God only knows I have.

I am in a contant battle on what to do next. You have more than one talent and that is always hard. I am somewhat "cursed" with the same dilemma. I have been writing for four years with no publication and at least you have fulfilled that part of your life. Will it be your future?

In all honesty, do you really need to choose? The one marvelous thing about writing is there is NO time frame. Write when the calling comes to you. For now, why not concentrate on your music? You next BIG writing idea can certainly wait. Don't go through life with the "What if" hanging over you like a dark thunder storm ready to crash down upon you.

One other bit to ponder on. You are at the age, where starting a new career is pivotal. If you should wait any longer, your age might hinder you. I was at that crossroads a few years back. I am a few years older than you so I get your anxiety. Follow your heart, Alex. It will never steer you wrong. Music has been a love for you for a lifetime, make that step. Three books is an amazing feat. Now a hit song is your next adventure.

I hope this helps, Alex. We all want you to be happy and stand beside you no matter what.

Cherie Colyer said...

The best writing comes when it's not forced, so I can understand if you want to take a break. Or even not write anymore. Follow your muse and you can't go wrong.

My hubby and I just watched Raiders of the Lost Arc. :)

Another blog hop already, Oh well, I'm game. I spent yesterday with my husband gardening, shopping at Lowes, and having dinner. It was a lovely day with no stress, or thoughts of things not done, but today back to the grind.
I'm one of those folks who has to write, it's who I am at heart, but multi-talented folk like you have more choices, and I think it's wonderful!
Have a great day!

Cherie Reich said...

If your idea is meant to be a novel, then I'm sure you'll find a way to write it.

And I love the snakes line from Raiders of the Lost Ark!

A Beer for the Shower said...

We're those crazy writers that have a ba-jillion ideas and want to make a long term career out of it. It's good that you're taking some time to think about it, but if you've got a great story idea and the talent (which you do) you don't want that looming "what if" to become "what if I had written that novel?" twenty years from now.

You certainly know my vote is for your next story to come to life. Then I am selfish that way.

Looks like I need to be about writing my reflections post...I had not realized when it was due, as I am sooo far behind reading blog favorites.

My quote is old school...Top Gun.

Anthony Edwards as "Goose" during a mock battle.

"Do some of that pilot shit, Mav"

You certainly have the following to help your career if you want to persist, Alex. I respect your desire to write truly different novels after this third one. I guess my first question would be how different you're willing to go, and how many ideas you get way outside of this space?

Charmaine Clancy said...

I often hear how talented you are Alex from other authors, so I don't think a lack of skills will affect your future decision. The thing is though, life is short and you should follow the path you desire, not just the ones you're good at. If you want to write, you absolutely can, if you want to do something else, you've a lot of people who'll cheer you on.

We've banned soft drink (I think you call them fizzy drinks. Actually I have no idea why we use the word soft, maybe because hard means alcohol?) for one month in our house. We often have one month challenges.

My quote of the day is from The Goonies - Chunk: [after Sloth kisses him] Man! You smell like Phys Ed!
