Retro Zombie and a Ninja Army Giveaway, Ninja News, Celebrating the Small Things, and Which is Better…?

Today I have the honor of welcoming one of my very best blogger buddies, Jeremy Hawkins from Retro-Zombie!

Jeremy is a returning A to Z Co-Host, an author, and an amazing artist – he’s responsible for my awesome new header. He’s involved in a lot more things than that though! And not only is he here to tell you about it, Jeremy comes with a cool surprise and a giveaway.

Howlin’ Wolf… Ninja Contest and Me!

Welcome to my nightmare and to the voices I have in my head… thank you to Alex for letting play in his blogger pool.

You all might know me, but do you know what I do with my time… well I am hoping to share the light. You might have been to my Retro-Zombie and or my Horror Directory, but have you been to Howlin’ Wolf Record’s site? Well I will give you the short version it started five years ago, it didn’t really have a purpose until the start of last year. This is where good friend Wall Crumpler [Owner of Howlin’ Wolf] contacted asked if I had plans for this site… so I become the voice for this independent record label. We review films, bands, book/authors, scores/soundtracks and have had some great interviews… really stuff or people I think you should know about.

Last year in December 2012 we had just a hair under 10,000 visitors compared to 2011 which sadly was 300-500, lame…I know. I just get to do what I love to do and that is films and score/soundtrack (do I need to tell you the difference)? So many great people out in the world, I just hope to share a percent… so please visit “The Howlin’ Wolf” and say hello!

So I mentioned a contest you may have noticed a new badge to Alex’s site… well you would see a “NINJA ARMY” [thank you, Elise Fallson] t-shirt. Want one? Be the 10th caller… kidding Alex will choose one of you lucky commenter’s here [if in the US, no problem… not most likely a gift card] to the NEATORAMA’s site. Also look around it’s my store see the great and powerful art/designs I have made.

Any Questions, come on just one?
-Jeremy Hawkins

Jeremy, you the man!

And while we’re giving away a Ninja Army t-shirt here, over at the Howlin’ Wolf Records Blog, we are giving away a copy of CassaStar. Double your chance to win something! (Winners will be announced on Monday.)

Ninja News

Laura at the Daily Dodo scared of heights – but she is jumping out of a plane for charity! She is raising money for Life Works, an organization that works with young people with disabilities. Click HERE to donate. We want to see her jump!

The Bookshelf Muse is celebrating five years, a million hits, and 20,000 copies sold of the Emotional Thesaurus! They are giving away a Kindle Paperwhite loaded with 10 ebooks. (And much to my surprise, CassaStar is one of the choices.) To enter, see their SITE.

Robin at Your Daily Dose just brought back her HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY video dedications – and she was kind enough to dedicate one to me. Thank you, Robin – you rock!

Thanks to everyone who jumped in with a movie quote on Wednesday! This is the official badge if you want to post a quote on your own blog. Every week, I will post the topic for the next week. January 30, it’s “light” fantasy. (Just so you know, LOTR is NOT light fantasy.)

The A to Z Challenge sign ups open next Wednesday! I’ll have a full description of what the Challenge is all about posted as well. Hope you can join us as we rock the blogging world for a fourth time.

Jamie Ayres’ book, 18 Things, is available now! Congratulations, Jamie. And I’ve had fun reading the entries for your 18 Things Blogfest.

Special thanks to Christine Rains for her review of CassaFire this week. Glad you enjoyed it, Christine!

Celebrate the Small Things

“Celebrate the Small Things” is hosted every Friday by VikLit.

Today I am celebrating the fact I learned not one but two new songs this week on my guitar. Actually I had three days to learn and perfect them. Including a solo. No pressure!

I was also informed by my publisher that the cover art for my next book, CassaStorm, would be ready by mid-February. Stoked to see it! I wonder if I should do a cover reveal? What do you guys think – would you sign up to reveal my next book’s cover?

Which is Better…?

And we’ll end with a round of which is better, just for the fun of it.

Which is better?

Star Trek or Star Wars?

And why?

Keep it civil, people! We all want to live long and prosper here. And yes, that should give you a clue as to who I would select, so no flaming.

Any questions for Jeremy? Ready to pick up a Ninja Army or other T-shirt? Excited about the news? Prepared for next Wednesday with your quote and to sign up for the A to Z Challenge? What small thing are you celebrating? And which is better - Star Trek or Star Wars?

Be sure to visit The Howlin’ Wolf - check it out and maybe you'll win a copy of CassaStar!

Star Trek or Star Wars? Hmm... I can't make up my mind about this one.

The new Ninja Army badge is awesome! I live it! Good job, Elise!:)

RaveAir said...

Your "which is better ST or SW" is a little bit ticky, because not easy to compare the two.

ST is primary a series, extended with some movies, and sci-fi. While the SW is rather fantasy or tale (with knights, queen, wizards, etc) which takes place in space.

I love better the Star Wars universe. I not really satisfied with the Episode I-III. Fortuntelly - most of - the books written after destroying 2nd Deathstar compensate for the shock made by the prequel-trilogy.

Star Trek. No contest.

And I love JJ Abrams, but couldn't SW have found another director?

Just become a follower of Jeremy and Howlin Wolf and made a donation to Laura.....my good deed for today.
AlL ready to sign for the A to Z.
it don't seem like this is the fourth challenge, I am still trying to get my music on for the challenge,

Have a good week-end.

I'm a fan of Jeremy, but didn't know about Howlin' Wolf record. I'll check it out. Congrats to Jamie Ayres. She is on fire.

J.L. Murphey said...

Wohoo! giveaways galore. Congrats on the new songs.

Star Wars is better at least the original ones 4-7 chapters. The later 1-3 chapters while having awesome special effects and characters left me cold.

The t-shirt looks cool and I'll be stopping by Jeremy's site next.

Arlee Bird said...

More creativity from Jeremy. Nice!

I guess I'd go with Star Trek since I've only seen a couple of the Star Wars movies. Actually I don't guess I seen many of either of these film series but I used to watch the old Star Trek TV shows all the time so I guess that's a sentimental favorite.

HOLY MOLY! There's so much going over here in Alexland that I can barely catch my breath! Howlin' Wolf looks AWESOME and jumping out of a plane for charity is even AWESOMER! Free stuff and video dedications and movie quotes... may I say again, HOLY MOLY! Can hardly wait to see your new cover - my Dave is pretty excited to read your new book.

Star Trek is better because I have a wee crush on Chris Pine.

Emily Genther said...

I'd have to go with Star Trek. Especially since the release of episodes 1-3 kind of ruined the whole Star Wars thing. Can't believe it's already that time of year for A to Z sign ups. Eek!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Kyra, thank you.

George, Elise did the figure and Jeremy made the design and t-shirt. Both rock!

Zoltan, the books are good. It is difficult to compare the two.

Donna, that's right! And not sure how I feel about him directing Star Wars either.

Yvonne, that was really nice of you to do that for Laura!!!

JL, the last three episodes almost ruined my childhood. (Or rather teenhood.)

Lee, good choice.

Cathy, you gave me a good laugh today! Tell Dave eight more months.

Emily, I think that's how a lot of people feel.

mooderino said...

Congrats to the Bookshelf Muse, I'm sure they'll go from strength to strength.

Go to say the first Star Wars movie will always hold a special place in my heart, but series vs series (taking into account movies, tv shows, Christmas Musicals) I think they're about even.

Elise Fallson said...

Great job Jeremy, the t-shirt rocks! I really need to start stalking you more. (;

kjmckendry said...

Love the t-shirt idea! And I would definitely help you reveal your new cover!

Hmm ST or SW...it's such a close one. Shatner is great but so is Harrison Ford. I always wanted to be a Jedi though, so SW is first for me.

A.J. Walker said...

I grew up with both Star Trek and Star Wars, but since Trek was on TV all the time and a new Star Wars movie came out only occasionally, I'd have to say Trek had more of an impact.

Al Diaz said...

Tough question. I like both but I...I like both.
Your cover reveal? Well, yeah, I would be happy to reveal your cover, hahaha, with fireworks and all.
Congratulations on the songs you learned.

Thank you, Kathy.

AJ, that logic makes sense.

Thanks, Al!!

Rusty, appreciate it.

Shelly, because the pups are just cool that way.

Kim, I can't wait to see it!

Susan Fields said...

I love the Ninja Army badge! And congrats on learning two new songs!

Louise said...

Star Wars, for me. I enjoy Star Trek, but until the new movie, anyway, it was always a bit too much "trying to make a point - HEAVILY" underneath the stories for my taste, while Star Wars was just sheer marvelous storytelling. Even with all its cliches and ridiculousness!

Awesome news here on the blog today!

Madeline Mora-Summonte said...

All I can think of is that episode of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon won't Leonard into the apartment if he doesn't like his answer - Star Trek or Star Trek The Next Generation? (L's answer was old series over new but Picard over Kirk. In case you were wondering.) :)

I don't know what I'm doing yet but I'm singing up for A-Z!

Ella said...

No fair, movie vs. TV?! Both made an impact on me. I guess I'd say Star Trek-my brother n' I were transported weekly to another place in time-the continuum. We were able to boldly go with our imaginations-my costumes helped ;D lol

Love the T-shirt! Wow Jeremy really does rock and he howls while he does it! wow....

So, excited by all the news...oh, yes do a cover reveal!

I, also love the badge ;D
Happy Friday Captain!

Donna K. Weaver said...

I love them both. Each has their own unique story to give. I grew up with Star Trek, so perhaps that's why I like the thing I heard Nichelle Nichols (the first Uhura) say on a show once: I'd rather be Star Trekkin' than Star Warrin'. Just like the Star Trek franchise, Nichelle manages to bring social commentary.

Shell Flower said...

Yay for the Ninja Army fighting insecurity! Congrats on learning those songs so quickly--that is not easy to do. I'd totally love to host a cover reveal! Yay for Jamie's 18 Things. Star Wars, sorry to say, perhaps it's because my mom used to always say "Spock can leave his shoes under my bed anytime." Ew.

Anonymous said...

Always so busy here. Love the tshirt. Elise is getting good mileage from her creative investment. Star Wars, absolutely, because Harrison Ford had that little somethin'-somethin' going back then.

Optimistic Existentialist said...

I gotta go with Star Wars Alex. I believe it's much more multi-layered. But you really can't argue with either answer!

ilima said...

I just bought the Emotion Thesaurus! Congrats to them. And I'm gonna have to go with Star Wars. I just can't resist a complex villain, and Darth is the godfather of them all. :)

I'm so ashamed to say that I have never seen ONE Star Trek episode or movie. (I know, I know.) So I'll have to go with Star Wars since I have seen all of the movies.

Star Trek for me. I used to watch the original programmes avidly as a young woman they were full of new inventions "beam me up Scotty" and I loved Spock - the next generation were OK but not as good. Nobody could beat Leonard Nimoy.

Love the Ninja Army and T-shirts. The Ninja's going big, huh ;)

It's a toss up, but when push comes to shove, Star Trek is my no-brainer pick...all those family memories of the boys glued to the t.v., while mom was trying to put dinner on the table for 8 kids...being the youngest, I actually got some good pickings this way, and the boys - well, they had their Star Trek :)

Roland D. Yeomans said...

I have a question for you, Alex:

What do you think of J J Abrams being the director of the new STAR WARS? Some are upset the same director is now at the helm of both huge kingdoms.

Jeremy is a fantastic guy. Go visit, HOWLING WOLF RECORDS everyone!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Madeline, I remember that episode! And you won't regret signing up for the Challenge.

Ella, I think it is all about the impact. And will keep you posted on the cover reveal.

Donna, interesting way to look at it!

Shell, that is odd about Spock's shoes...

Julie, you need to catch up!

Jo, growing up with it seemed to make a difference.

MJ, fun memory.

Roland, mixed. Don't want to see Star Trek suffer as a result. And it's almost like a conflict of interest. But at least he'll do a good job, and Star Wars desperately needs a good movie.

mshatch said...

well, I'm going to answer that last question with the idea that Star Trek means ALL of Star Trek (from the original James T. Kirk to the latest incarnation and all those trekkie places in between). And while I love Star Wars with all my heart and will never ever forget the feeling of that opening scene and that massive ship taking up the entire screen while my eyes were no doubt as big as saucers and my heart thumping happily - I still choose Star Trek. There might have been some cheese now and again, but there was no Jar Jar for 3 consecutive movies plus, Star Trek had some great characters like Spock, Picard, and Data, and so many fabulous episodes like the one with Hugh or Mirror, Mirror, for example.

Star Trek gets my vote :)

As always, you have so much NEWS. Do you keep a list???

For the record, it was a tremendous shock to the system to see MY NAME in your mentions. Thanks. Didn't expect it. That made it really special.

I realize that I won't be very good at keeping to your genre on the Movie Quote of the Week. However, I still want to participate. Is that a problem? If so, I won't use the badge. After all, I am breaking the rules.

As much as I liked Star Wars, Star Trek is still my favorite.

Johanna Garth said...

Tough choice. I really love the new Star Trek movies but (I know this heresy) didn't like the series. And as for Star Wars, I think I know all the lines by heart which is, depending on your view point, either a benefit or detriment to having a son!

And you were 100% correct with your comment on my blog!

Great on learning the new songs so quick, Alex. I'd reveal your cover. February is getting busy, but I'll make room.

Christine Rains said...

Lots of news today! Thank you for the shout-out. I would happily participate in a cover reveal. As for the BIG question, I'm going with Star Trek. I dedicated much more of my viewing time and daydreams to it than Star Wars.

Johanna, cool.

Yolanda, thanks.

Mary, thanks, and you are uber cool.

Christine, thanks for reading my book. And you are also cool.

Patsy, will do!

Star Wars vs Star Trek? You are trying to incite a geek riot aren't you? haha

I never thought there should be an issue. One (originally) was more towards hard SF (trek) while the other was fantasy. Might as well say which is better, SF or Fantasy?

I'm ready for the A-Z challenge this time. I've already pre-written most of the posts.

Can't wait to see the new cover art!

Star Wars vs Star Trek the movies or the series? Because you really can't compare a movie with the shows. If the movies, I vote Star Wars.

Never having seen Star Trek I'm going to have to cast my vote for Star Wars. Only episodes 4, 5, and 6 though. 1, 2 and 3 weren't worth the time I spent watching them in my opinion.

A to Z signups start so soon? Wow, I have to make my decision on whether or not to do it fast. I'm so indecisive. If I could just think uo a theme....

Lynda R Young as Elle Cardy said...

I'd definitely help with your cover reveal.. so exciting!!!

I can't say simply which is better re star Trek or Star Wars. It all depends on which ones we're talking about. Even the worst Star Trek is better than the Phantom Menace... Wrath of Khan beats everything, but Star Wars original is awesome and is better than even Star Trek original (by a thin margin). So you see, this question is difficult to answer... ;)

Star Trek is much better. At least the older series as well as the movies. Why? Because...they are! :) No, the varied story lines and the characters. None is better than the original Star Trek cast.

SC, that is really odd. I've never seen that happen with my iPad either.

Jaybird, no way you are extra large.

Andrew, and rather than make my case, I'll ask two questions - which one has influenced more astronauts and which one has a lower percentage of movies that suck?

TS, just seeing what would happen! They really aren't much different except both have rabid fans.

Mark, back at you!

Penny, good one - dead studio audience!

Jeremy! You rock! I love your artwork.

Alex - I would so sign up for your cover reveal!

I really don't think we can compare Star Trek and Star Wars. At least I can't. I like them both for different reasons.

Okay, I have to say that I believe Star Trek is better. Star Wars is entertaining and action packed. However, Star Trek has more of a scientific basis to most of the futuristic inventions. Warp speed is real. It started as a concept and is now coming to fruition.

I hope none of the Star Wars fans throw rotten tomatoes at me.

*hides underneath my blankets* :)

While I love Star Wars, I would always go with Star Trek - it was 1st experience of science fiction & I spent many nights planning out scripts in my head when I was supposed to be sleeping. I even wrote a ST novel WAY back - just for me and I have no idea whatever happened to it. Probably on a big ol' floppy disk somewhere... :)

Chuck said...

Star Trek...hands down. First of all without it Star Wars would never have existed. I watched all the Star Treks (TV and Movies). Only really like the original Star Wars. Just me!

Star Wars is for sure 100% better:-) Many references to the epic saga in 18 Things--thanks so much for the shout out and I've enjoyed all your visits for the blog fest this past week~hugs!

Cathy Keaton said...

Which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars? Well, JJ Abrams is directing both new films, so my guess is they will be equal. I've always liked ST:TNG the best, though.

I've stopped by Howlin' Wolf Records and it's a great site. Count me as a fan!
Congrats to the Bookshelf Muse and THE EMOTIONAL THESAURUS!
Alex - Yay for the two songs and solo! And I'm looking forward to seeing the new cover for CASSASTORM! :-)

Love Jeremy's work and I happen to think he is a most excellent member of this community.

Star Trek all the way. I loved the that universe and all the intermingling of species. My fave was DS9 and being a huge DS9 fan, I'll leave you with Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #192 "Never cheat a Klingon...unless you can get away with it." ;)

Man, Alex,

Your posts get LONGER and more full of info every week!

Cool HEADER an T-shirt Jeremy designed. What a true friend you have in him.

LOVE the idea of a cover reveal. You KNOW I am in... I can do "my bit" for you. As far as I know, I am the only one who creates "unusual" and original intros for reveals. And I must admit, I am proud of that. I take cover reveal very seriously and they DESERVE to be honored in a special way. Not just flung onto a post or as an after thought to another post.

Congrats on learning your songs.... I know you are still hashing out that tough decision. Enjoy both while you can. Perhaps you can figure out a way to do it .... if anyone can, you can!

Have a great weekend Alex!

I grew up on Star Trek so I've just bonded with it more than I have Star Wars -- can't objectively say which one is better.

How exciting that you'll soon see your new book cover!

Congrats Jeremy! You do such a great job.

Will have to check out Christine's review.

Oh Alex, My review of Cassa Fire will be up soon too! Just need to find some time to write all the reviews of the books I have read over my recent holiday break. (Loved it though!)

A Ninja Army t-shirt would be so cool!

Star Trek or Star Wars - I'd have to say Star Trek TNG because Patrick Stewart is so cool too. Now if Patrick Stewart had a Ninja Army t-shirt...

Trisha said...

Yup, I would sign up for the cover reveal thingy too! Very exciting stuff!!

Annalisa, that would be cool.

Thanks, Trisha!

Yes, I can't wait to see the cover for CassaStorm. Please, Alex.

Jeremy is such a nice, cool and funny guy - too.

I guess I have to go with Star Wars, because Yoda's as cute and wise as he is creepy and old.

Sorry I was so late to visit, Alex. Hope you're enjoying the weekend.

I'd love to help you do a cover reveal!

I'd pick Star Wars. I didn't appreciate William Shatner as an actor until he joined Boston Legal.

What fun giveaways! Congrats on the new song and the pub date! Can't wait to see the cover!

It is SW for me- but probably because my brothers and I were obsessed with it when we were little. :)

My copy of The Emotion Thesaurus is crinkled and coffee-stained. Love their site.

Star Wars is make believe. Star Trek is real. Nuff said.

Love the t-shirts! And I have to pick Star Wars. Not much of a Trekkie. *Gasp!* I know!

Intangible Hearts said...

You are so talented. Guitar and writer? Awesome. Not a Trekkie and Star Wars is not me either but Ninja turtles sound kind of cute. LOL Sorry, I'm out of circulation for awhile and have no idea what's going down. Thought I'd visit a few of my loyal followers.

Star Trek is better probably because I loved the characters and got to know them in the series. Love the image of the Star Ship Enterprise!

Can't wait to sign up for A to Z

Star Trek or Star Wars...That almost like asking about Elvis or The Beatles. Yikes. Star Wars has a bug place in my heart but if I was forced to choose I'd go with Star Trek just because I've grow up with more exposure to it and all the many versions of TV shows. The good, bad, and ugly ones included. I like them all. ... but then there is Han Solo...mmmm

congrats on the songs, shhh don't tell anyone but I am a silent trekkie! xo

Despite the bad acting, teddy bears, and the more recent three movies, I'm going for Star Wars. I am excited about the new Star Trek movie this summer though.

Anstice Brown said...

Wow, so much good news! I hadn't been to Retro Zombie or The Howlin' Wolf-thanks for introducing me to both. Love your new banner. Thanks for all the great links, will check them out. And congrats on learning 2 new songs on your guitar in 3 days-that's pretty impressive! Excited about the cover of CassaStorm-please do a cover reveal! I'm also psyched for the A-Z challenge. As for the Star Trek v Star Wars debate, I must admit that I like both, but I prefer Star Trek. I grew up watching Star Trek with my Dad and I find it more funny and the characters more relatable than those of Star Wars.

Cool t-shirt! Love it, and I promise, if you choose to send it to me, Alex, I will wear it and even take a goofy photo, which I will post on my website and Facebook :-)

Congratulations to Becca and Angela! Emotional Thesaurus rocks!

Star Trek versus Star Wars... I'm of no help. I like both. Period.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Mel, the horror!

Desert, thank you.

Monti, you rock.

Susan, you are uber-cool.

Melissa, counting your vote for Star Trek.

Katherine, won' tell a soul...

Anstice, thanks, and Trek is awesome.

Angela, we have our winner!!!!

Great stuff, Alex -- I don't know how you keep it all straight. Up until the three prequel movies, I would have said STAR WARS without a doubt. But since Jar-Jar and the AWESOME Star Trek reboot, I'll have to side with the Federation on this.

Hey Alex! I don't really like Star Trek or Star Wars, but I do like your blog, and I've given you an award. I know you've got a lot of them, so I figure, hey, what's one more?!

Unknown said...

Star Wars! But the newest Trek film definitely scored some points. (I enjoyed the previous Trek films, but wasn't a huge fan. The JJA one blew me away.)

Now we get a Star Wars film FROM the cool Trek director. So Star Wars wins again. :-)

Congrats on learning new songs! And jumping out of an airplane for charity sounds awesome!!! I'm impressed by the Daily Dodo's awesmeness.
Cool art Jeremy!
Star Wars . . .it's like fused into my childhood imagination and daydreams . . .I love Star Trek too, but Star Wars is my fave. For some reason this question had me re-thinking my A to Z topic. Grr. Which one to choose now? Something serious or something totally fun?

Kelley Lynn said...

Wahoo on the new songs!

Ummm, I don't think I could choose between Star Trek or Star Wars...

Ellie Garratt said...

Jeremy is the man!

Star Trek or Star Wars? How very dare you. Khaannn!!!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Michelle, I had no choice but learn them fast.

Milo, wise choice. And it's all in the use of clones...

Gossip Girl, yes I am!

EJ, the movie has a chance now.

Tyrean, go for fun!

Ellie, that's right!

Star Trek or Star Wars? Both are good, but Star Trek came before in my life and get ahead.

Hi Alex, I think the zombie thing missed me :-), but I love hearing about other's successes with them. I was wondering if I could ask you a favor. On February 5th I'm going to run a rafflecopter contest (through 2/18) to give away a free query critique. I've had a lot of success querying my current MS, and want to give back to the blogger community. Would you be willing to mention it on or after Feb. 5th? My blog is http://amyjarecki.blogspot.com. Thank you!

I LOVE Elise's Ninja art for the shirt. I'll have to check the Howlin' Wolf Records site to see if I can buy one...unless you wanna pick me to win!! *wink*
I did A to Z last year and learned so much about myself and my writing abilities, but now I am in the first year of a new business venture and am working my tail off. I'm doing good to balance work with writing, so no A to Z for me.
I'm celebrating multiple entries in an annual writing contest here in Oklahoma. So proud of myself for expanding my writing portfolio.
Star Trek or Star Wars? Really? I have to pick? I grew up watching both and they are nothing alike. I loved them both. If I have to pick, my fave is probably Star Wars because the struggle between good and evil is a huge obsession of mine and why I write.
I'll definitely check out the Howlin' Wolf. Your book is on my to-read list, winning a copy would definitely move it up!

I'd like a Ninja Army coffee cup! Now that would be cool.

Good luck to Jeremy! I gave a few Twitter shout outs.

Star Wars or Star Trek??? I honestly don't know. I've never been a junkie of either of the series. I choose Spaceballs.

Unknown said...

I love the Ninja Army logo - it rocks!

I'd have to go with Star Wars as I never got into Trek growing up (I've still not seen a single episode or older movie yet). I really enjoyed the Abrams reboot, so I'm more of a neo-Trekkie :)
